New Semester Starts!!!

nothing much to say bout it....maybe about homework.....

1st day already got homework....damn =.=

Hope that the homework wont be piled up and be like a mountain!!

Maybe i should complain about the timetable....stupid one!!

Having 1 day of 9hours, 1 day of 6hours, 2 days of 3 hours, and 1 day of 4 hours which equals to EVERYDAY HAVING CLASS!!! WTH!!!

The 3 hour slot should have just combined and then have a day off at least.

Lastly, CLASS ENDS AT 615pm EVERYDAY except Friday!! DAMN SUCK!!!

How i wish i take 4 papers last sem..... Just hope for the best for this sem!!

p.s. Sad to say....this time...results coming out 2 days before my birthday....dont know i should be sad or happy.....

It was happened in the early morning...

When it was raining heavily and also strong wind!!!

Caused a big tree outside the compound of my place to FALL!!

Worse of all.....the branch of that tree FALL EXACTLY on my car!!

DAMN!!! DONT KNOW WHAT TO SAY!!

although i knew that he can achieve more than 200pts.

Saturday....went to shopping in Melaka

Just to check whether here got size or not....

Not really into shopping for clothes in Melaka.

In the end, bought a shirt instead of jeans that i wanted.

Went Pavilion after a long hours of class....
Had dinner @ Pepper Lunch
It is somehow special way to eat in the sense that we eat on the pan.
I know that other places also have this but then this restaurant serve it differently
They cooked the food became half-cooked and we continue to cook it.
Yummy......that comes with a price...*rather high*
RM15 for the cheapest set w/o egg n drink.

Went to this restaurant for lunch before badminton session!!

Not that the place is sucks....the service is sucks!!!

It took almost 40mins for a soup. WTH...

30mins for spaghetti.....DAMN!!

For over a decade, The Wall Street Journal and The Heritage Foundation, Washington’s preeminent think tank, have tracked the march of economic freedom around the world with the influential Index of Economic Freedom.

What is economic freedom?

Economic freedom is the fundamental right of every human to control his or her own labor and property. In an economically free society, individuals are free to work, produce, consume, and invest in any way they please, with that freedom both protected by the state and unconstrained by the state. In economically free societies, governments allow labor, capital and goods to move freely, and refrain from coercion or constraint of liberty beyond the extent necessary to protect and maintain liberty itself.

How do you measure economic freedom?

We measure ten components of economic freedom, assigning a grade in each using a scale from 0 to 100, where 100 represents the maximum freedom. The ten component scores are then averaged to give an overall economic freedom score for each country. The ten components of economic freedom are:

2010 Index of Economic Freedom: Malaysia ranked 59 in the world and 9 in the Asia-Pacific Region

Malaysia’s economic freedom score is 64.8, making its economy the 59th freest in the 2010 Index. Its score is 0.2 point better than last year, reflecting improvements in four of the 10 economic freedoms. Malaysia is ranked 9th out of 41 countries in the Asia–Pacific region, and its overall score is above the world and regional averages.

Malaysia’s ongoing reform measures have enhanced the overall entrepreneurial environment. The economy scores above the world average in eight of the 10 economic freedoms. The labor sector is relatively flexible, with simple employment procedures and no mandated minimum wage. The top income and corporate tax rates are moderate and have been reduced, and the overall tax burden is low as a percentage of GDP.

The financial sector has weathered the global financial crisis relatively well. Limits on foreign ownership in financial sub-sectors were eased, improving financial freedom, and numerous domestic equity requirements that restricted foreign investment were eliminated. Corruption and a judicial system that remains vulnerable to political influence remain significant challenges to economic freedom in Malaysia.

Background

Malaysia, an ethnically and religiously diverse constitutional monarchy, became independent in 1957 and has been ruled since then by the United Malays National Organization. Huge electoral inroads made by the opposition coalition, led by the People’s Justice Party, in March 2008 were due largely to popular dissatisfaction with pro-Malay affirmative action programs and widespread corruption. Malaysia has slowly liberalized its economy, but government ownership in such key sectors as banking, automobiles, and airlines remains high. Malaysia is a leading exporter of electronics and information technology products, and its industries range from agricultural goods to automobiles.

Business Freedom 69.9

The overall freedom to start, operate, and close a business is somewhat limited by Malaysia’s regulatory environment. Starting a business takes an average of 11 days, compared to the world average of 35 days. Obtaining a business license takes more than the world average of 18 procedures and 218 days. Bankruptcy proceedings are relatively straightforward.

Trade Freedom 78.7

Malaysia’s weighted average tariff rate was 3.1 percent in 2007. Some high tariffs, import and export taxes, import restrictions, high services market access barriers, import and export licensing, non-transparent regulations and standards, non-transparent government procurement, export subsidies, and weak protection of intellectual property rights add to the cost of trade. Fifteen points were deducted from Malaysia’s trade freedom score to account for non-tariff barriers.

Fiscal Freedom 84.3

Malaysia has moderate tax rates. The top individual income tax rate is 27 percent (non-residents are subject to a flat 28 percent tax). The corporate tax rate has been reduced to 25 percent from 26 percent. Other taxes include a capital gains tax and a vehicle tax. Under a single-tier tax system that became effective on January 1, 2008, dividend income is exempt from income tax. In the most recent year, overall tax revenue as a percentage of GDP was 14.8 percent.

Government Spending 81.3

Total government expenditures, including consumption and transfer payments, are relatively low. In the most recent year, government spending equaled 25.0 percent of GDP.

Monetary Freedom 76.7

Inflation has been moderate, averaging 4.4 percent between 2006 and 2008. Most prices are determined in the market, but the government influences certain prices through state-owned enterprises; controls the prices of petroleum products, steel, cement, wheat flour, sugar, milk, bread, and chicken; and usually sets ceiling prices for a list of essential foods during major holidays. Ten points were deducted from Malaysia’s monetary freedom score to account for policies that distort domestic prices.

Investment Freedom 30.0

Foreign investment is welcome in certain sectors, and some domestic equity requirements have been eliminated. Certain kinds of investment are screened, though commercial operations can begin before approval. Resolving commercial disputes can be complex and time-consuming. Regulations are burdensome and non-transparent, and skilled labor is in short supply. Residents and non-residents may hold foreign exchange accounts, subject in many cases to government approval. Nearly all capital transactions are subject to restrictions or require government approval. Ownership of agricultural land is restricted to Malaysians.

Financial Freedom 50.0

Supervision of banking has been strengthened, and non-performing loans have decreased to less than 5 percent. Mergers among local banks have been encouraged to increase overall competitiveness. There are 38 commercial banks, 20 of which are domestically owned. The central bank licenses and regulates banks. Islamic banking based on Sharia law accounted for around 17 percent of total banking assets in 2008. Foreign firms’ overall participation in the financial sector remains restricted. Equity participation is limited to 30 percent for commercial banks, but in 2009, the central bank raised the foreign ownership limit concerning Islamic banks, investment banks, and insurance companies to 70 percent from the previous 49 percent. The financial system has withstood the global financial crisis relatively well, and banks remain generally well capitalized and liquid.

Property Rights 55.0

Private property is protected, but the judiciary is subject to political influence. Corporate lawsuits take over a year to file, and many contracts include a mandatory arbitration clause. Despite plans to ratify the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Copyright Treaty and the WIPO Performances and Phonograms Treaty, complaints about lax enforcement of intellectual property rights persist, and the manufacture and sale of counterfeit products have led to serious losses for producers of consumer products and pharmaceuticals.

Freedom From Corruption 51.0

Corruption is perceived as present. Malaysia ranks 47th out of 179 countries in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index for 2008. The law provides criminal penalties for official corruption, but it has not been implemented effectively, and officials engage in corrupt practices with impunity. The media have reported numerous cases of alleged official corruption.

Labor Freedom 71.4

Labor regulations are relatively flexible. The non-salary cost of employing a worker is low, but dismissing an employee remains difficult and costly. There is no national minimum wage, and restrictions on work hours are flexible.

Was sleeping soundly the night before....

Dont know why....

Usually cant fall asleep when result is coming out the next day.

Scared to fail too....as this will drag me further....

and perhaps makes myself not confident anymore.

Worst part was....having class on the day itself.

Attendance wasnt that good though.

Like 50% attended....

After 1pm....which the lecturer give breaks....

some went to check the results...

me n mich cant checked....

was very frus....everyone seems to have known their results....except us.

Luckily, we both managed to get thru.

Finally i can say that i m ACCA student and no longer in CAT.

Han seng n wong also passed!!

Went back to school with ky n keeweng.

Last day of school though.

So long never step into SFI since Mr Ong's retirement i think.

School still w/o principal....just hope that the new one would be a nice person

and perhaps....a non Malay would be preferred.

I m not being racist here but this school is full of culture n tradition....

to be precise...its a La Salle School and having a chapel inside the school.

A Malay principal may change all the culture and traditions that we had.

Besides, the Anniversary Dinner is back again....

including 10bucks for entrance fee.

This year went quite a number of houses.

Quite a lot turned up though....like 20ppl.

On the way back home....saw an accident

Watched Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief.

The movie was not bad.....7.5/10. The story just happen a lil fast.

Then had dinner at Porridge House.

Waited for almost 1hour before our food arrive.

DAMN HUNGRY!!

Then, continue gamble at hs place. Loke Yuan wanted to revenge back. LOL

Last Day in Melaka for CNY

Brought my parents to go for movie.....2 movies in a row.

I would like to comment on the cinema @ MP.

LFS aka Lotus Five Star Cinema....

The design outside...looks good.

Toilet also clean.

Interior...nothing much changed except the seats are all new.

Just like GSC chairs. The price....very competitive.

Later at nite, went to Mdm Vivienne's house....with hs, mich, hk, ky n keeweng.

and Marilyn's house after that....with Tzong Meng n Stella joining.

At her house, its more like gambling than chit chatting session...lol

Won $$...at 1st lost but thanks to the last round...5 cards n 21pts. Triple pay!!

1st day of hols....supposed to go Sunway Lagoon but plan cancelled.

Changed to movie marathon...i think 1st time watching 3 MOVIES IN A ROW!!

Due to CNY is coming.....planned to watch CNY movies..

This movie is much better than the next movie.

But sadly, there changed alot...

the place used to housed alot of branded shops

selling at a cheaper price & are old stocks.

Unfortunately, there's nothing suit me....

although the price already SLASHED by >50%

To fellow panelist Dr. Azly Rahman, it is good to see you again! I was in Greece recently and imagined you conducting a Socratic-like seminar on the meaning of truth, wisdom, and knowledge, under those imposing columns! To Ambassador Jarjis, it is a pleasure meeting you and your wife again. That was an impressive picture of you with President Obama, a portrait of a Malay hulubalang (knight), fearsome yet elegant, with his tanjak (keris) discreetly tucked underneath the samping. To Ali Iqbal, you significantly lower the average age of the panelists. I enjoyed your panoramic take on the current economic crisis. It was thankfully free of economic jargons and thus very informative.

To many, “1Malysia” is one of those slogans Malaysian leaders are so fond of coining. Before that there was Malaysia Boleh (Malaysian Can!), and more recently, Cemerlang, Gemilang, dan Terbilang (excellence, glory, and distinction), and, as it turned out, all temberang (hot air). To others, 1Malaysia is Prime Minister Najib Razak’s website. Or is it that of a web-hosting company?

That last remark is unkind, of course, a lousy attempt at humor on my part! That done with, I now turn to the topic at hand.

“IMalaysia” is Najib’s vision of a united Malaysia. The eight values of his 1Malaysia are perseverance, culture of excellence, acceptance, loyalty, education, humility, integrity, and meritocracy. I am sure you were grilled on that at your scholarship interviews back home.

I do not know what the difference is, if any, between a culture of excellence and meritocracy, or between acceptance and loyalty. My hunch is that Najib is superstitious, and eight is an auspicious number in his scheme of things.

Vision 2020 is former Prime Minister Mahathir’s inspiration, first articulated in1991, to propel Malaysia towards a developed state by 2020. His original title was, “The Way Forward,” but that did not have quite the same zing.

One dictionary defines a developed state as one with a high degree of industrialization and standard of living brought on by wealth and technology. Being the iconoclast that he is, Mahathir has his own ideas. To him, a developed state is one that is, among others, “psychologically liberated,” “fully moral,” and “fully caring.” Then perhaps unsure of what those fuzzy terms mean, he added the traditional economic criterion of “doubling of real gross domestic product every ten years between 1990 and 2020.”

Mahathir’s reference to GDP is both inadequate and misleading. What is relevant is the size of the economy relative to the population: the per capita GDP. A developed nation typically has a per capita income in excess of $18K, adjusted for purchasing power parity. That too has its limitations. Brunei’s per capita GDP is nearly $50K, way ahead of Canada, but no one would suggest that Brunei is developed. The figure for Malaysia is about $12K.

The United Nations has a more inclusive measure with its Human Development Index (HDI). It factors in the health of the population (as reflected in life expectancy), level of education (as measured by adult literacy and school enrollment rates), and standard of living (per capita GDP). Developed nations generally have an index greater than 0.900; Malaysia’s at 0.826. If you believe in HDI, Malaysia is more developed than Russia!

I have a simpler definition. A developed state is like pornography; I know it when I see it, to borrow Justice Potter Stewart’s famous phrase. When I drive south from San Diego, California, to Tijuana, Mexico, I know that I am leaving a developed country and entering a developing one. When I drive into Montreal, Canada, from Plattsburgh, New York, I know that I am entering another developed country.

In Tijuana, if the police were to stop me, I would grab my wallet to see how much cash I have to bribe him. If a similar incident were to happen in Canada, I would check my driver’s license and car registration papers.

If I were unfortunate enough to have an accident in Tijuana, my first thought would be how to get back across the border as quickly as possible. In Canada, I would not hesitate being sent to the nearest hospital. When dining out in Montreal, my only consideration would be the choice of cuisine, ambience, and of course, cost. In Tijuana I would have to choose very carefully, and even then I would stay away from the ice and salads.

I leave it to you to judge where Malaysia is, closer to Tijuana or Montreal.

My late father had an astute observation on what is meant by a developed society. I was visiting him after a long absence. It was in 1969, right after the deadly race riots, and the streets of Kuala Lumpur were deserted. I was driving him and we came to a stop sign. I duly stopped. He asked me why I did that, and thinking that he did not see the sign, replied,

“There was a stop sign.”

“But there were no cars,” he protested.

I did not reply. After a long pensive pause he added, “That is why the West is advanced. People there obey the law even when no one is watching!”

He may not have realized it, but my late father was on to something profound. That is, respect for the rule of law is the feature of a developed society. This is precisely what is lacking in a developing country, and more importantly, what keeps it trapped in its backward state.

The prevailing ethics in a developing country is that the law applies only to ordinary people, not the leaders. Those in power have nothing but contempt for the law. It is there to serve their purpose, and they never hesitate using it against their enemies. On a mundane level, I have a picture of a limousine, with the title “Ketua Hakim Negara” (Chief Justice) emblazoned across its license plate, parked illegally and blocking the traffic at Sepang International Airport.

Of course even in America cars of cabinet secretaries and congressmen are exempt from the usual parking restrictions, but you would never see their cars blocking traffic at Reagan National Airport.

In New York, the biggest traffic violators are diplomats from developing countries. There is a definite correlation between those diplomats and the World Bank’s index of public corruption in their home country. Merely living in a developed country does not make you a developed person. This supports my contention that you should focus on developing your people, not your country.

The Quran reminds us to “command good and forbid evil!” as if Allah is watching over us at all times (“closer than our jugular vein”). In a developed country, they obey the law as if someone is watching over them all the time. Of course today there are surveillance cameras at traffic intersections. Better not run the red light!

The challenge is to ensure that Malaysia is headed towards Montreal and not sliding back to Tijuana. If we do not get to Montreal, we will automatically slide quickly towards Tijuana. Make not mistake about that; standing still is not an option.

Had my haircut before going to......

HOWEVER.....

Managed to survived through and get the fresh air inside....

and also managed to watch performance...

Paid Rm150....STUPID!!! Only know how to summon people but dont know how to catch theives..... Crime level is so HIGH especially in Klang Valley.

Went to another warehouse sale.....

This time at The Mall, KL

Buy 3 Free 1 Promo!!!

In the end, bought 2 Levi's T-shirt (RM39.90 each)

And Quiksilver shorts (RM59.90) for myself.

Checked the price of the shorts in Quiksilver boutique...it cost RM239!!

Imagine the price diff...its the same product!!

Not rejected but its imported from other places.

Took a free DKNY T-shirt coz Buy 3 Free 1!!

All the cost....was only RM 139.70!!

As i was rushing for outing after the sales....

Its kinda far coz went all the way to KL and then back to Subang for the outing!!
In the end, got a road block and i was caught with speeding.......

Due to the sales that we went.

However, i found out there's another warehouse sale going on at Amcorp Mall, PJ

Abit disappointed though...nothing much here....

Nike stuffs are mostly sportswear...no shoes..

In the end, bought a black FCUK T-shirt for RM39.90

While hanseng bought Ted Baker shirt for his dad...RM99 only (n.p. RM500+)

At there also i bought a Giordano Polo T-shirt *Red stripes....for CNY*

Then, a sudden craze over warehouse sales....went for another one in Atria, Damansara

There's sales there but then nothing suits....

Later in the evening, went to Pavilion KL to shop...KY n Joanne tag along....

Saw Snowflake dessert was opened near Padini and had a try...

Since there's opening promo....Buy 1 Free 1

Used Michelle's Padini birthday month voucher to buy the things there.

Bought a long pants....white one...i think it will be hard to take care....

But i will try.....after discount RM78.

After that, had dinner at Wong Kok Char Chan Teng.....

Today managed to get home early and also avoided the jam.

Got home early....within 20mins reached d compared to last week.

Besides, the weather suddenly turns bad which makes the jam even worse.Luckily i reached home earlier.

Had only one class for the day....went for movie in MidValley

Although some jokes may be abit lame but its a movie that is 100% produced by Malaysian

Its worth to watch though. Support Malaysia!! haha

After the movie, had a lil bit of shopping time....

Then later at night, went to Tenji to had dinner/supper which is 930pm start.

Abit disappointed though.... coz there's abit changes.....not much food but more dessert.

Saw the warehouse sale ads around my college and it starts today!!!

Luckily, my class starts at 1145am and the sale starts at 10am.

In the end....i think i spent around RM160 in there.

Bought a pair of Nike shoe which cost only RM75

Its weekend again.....my last day of class for the week.

However, something happened during the 1st class....

Our lecturer of Tax fired us suddenly.....

saying some of the students having "tidak apa" attitude...bla bla bla

Then the next class.....i shift up to sit behind...coz the lecturer is abit boring.....

didnt fully concentrating what he say.

Worst part was.....after some students signed the attendance...

they skipped the class when the lecturer gave us break time.

Had experienced the 1st WORSE jam in 2010......

Left college at 620pm....and reach home almost 8pm.

Usually it took only 15-20mins.

Had my 1st morning class.....only 1 slot for the day

Means till 11am. then went pyramid for lunch @ FullHouse

Walked around pyramid b4 the lunch hour specials which starts at 12pm.

Then went shopping around b4 going back.

Had 1st 6hour class of LAW.....the most boring class i supposed.

Because the subject is FULLY THEORY.....like History.

However, the lecturer is good/kind enough to give us 1/2 hour breaks....

of which the other lecturer only give us a mere 10mins.

Had my 1st class on this day....worst thing was....6HOURS of F6 Taxation......which is err...TOO LONG and hard to absorb.....i did learned before last sem before deferring. So it wasnt that hard to learn again.

Nothing much happened.....perhaps i became class representative.

Traffic jam wasnt that bad since the lecturer and us agreed to sacrifice out break time in order to get back early to avoid the WORST JAM EVER!!!

went shopping at Mid Valley Megamall....

Bought a wallet from Quiksilver.....

Besides....bought a Polo-T from G2000.

Conclusion....everyone got their own stuff.

Michelle bought Converse shoe

Nigel bought Quiksilver shirt n Guy Laroche wallet

Han Seng bought Quiksilver belt

Ky bought G2000 shirt

Had lunch at The Spaghetti Farm (TSF) @ LG Midvalley Megamall

Fast food concept.....which is self-service.

Price is reasonable...RM8.90-RM9.90 for a la carte Spaghetti

while RM12-RM13 for a set which includes soup n drink.

Chicken/Beef Bolognaise (coz the color looks the same)

Add RM3.20 for the soup n a drink

Dinner.....tried Din Tai Fung @ Gardens Midvalley

Only me ordered main course...the rest acted poor.....

Went to had dinner with ah mie n mui, mui fu @ sunway pyramid....

Supposed to go Full House but then....

they had a diff menu for festive season....

*which is super expensive*

So, we went to Manhattan Fish Market.

Then, went on to walk around / shopping till almost 10pm

(during shopping time.....had Tutti Frutti *Yogurt ice-cream*)

nice!!! *choose your own toppings n flavour by yourself*

RM 5.30 per 100g if i m not mistaken.

(mine was around 200g and they had 25% discount during New Year so its around RM9)

Left Sunway Pyramid for Mont Kiara *Soho KL* with han seng, mich, nigel n ky.

Reached there around 1130pm.....managed to get a place to park and walked around there.

Went Coffee Bean to had a drink while waiting for the new year to come...

Just after we bought our drinks.....Left approx 1min before the countdown....

and *boom* marks the New Year....fireworks display...

Happy New Year 2010!!!

After that, went to Kayu @ Aman Suria *mamak* for supper.... 2am still full house....

Ky supposed to pay for his meal but acted dont know....
till the person chase him to pay for his meal.

Went back and played poker till around 5am.

Went back KL for New Year and also start of new semester....

Supposed to have attend the lucky draw organised by

Kim Gary Hong Kong Restaurant but then were late for it.

Bosco Wong was there to officiate the lucky draw.

The lucky draw was at Sg Wang....so far compared to Sunway Pyramid.
Since the lucky draw already missed.....went to eat dinner there.

I mean affordable...coz its cheap...Less than RM10.

it is genuine or fake coz there's like a few Levi's Store there...

Xmas Eve....watched Alvin n The Chipmunks 2 at the Charity Screening by MHS
and went back to KL with Hui Kit to celebrate Xmas in KL. Had dinner at Kim Gary
Watched 2nd time of Alvin and The Chipmunks 2 at GSC Tropicana City....after the
movie is already almost 12am.....i heard ppl were cheering Merry Xmas!!
Then, went to Curve a while before going back home.

Nothing much to say.....coz its not my camp anyway. Overall....i would like to say
The trend has changed. The camp was just so so only. Its more like a camp which has nothing to do with scouts....thats all i want to say. Dont want to say much.

Pork rice set

Chicken rice set.....inside got mayonese

Overall, not bad....abit pricey coz its around RM20+ per set. But its very filling...

Movie marathon again......this time....2012 and Time Traveler's Wife

Dont think that its very expensive..... Its only RM6 per movie.

Movie comment.....2012 i rate it 8/10.....it was just ok only....
coz ady have spoilers.....knew the ending b4 i watched it.

Time Traveler's Wife i rate it 7/10....
but i dont think there's such thing in this world....
Even if it exist....maybe i dont know bout it.

Both movie was ok...Poker King was kinda long....2 hours....but Jennifer's Body abit short...but with some censored words and some part of the movie was cut off.

In between the movie...went for lunch at San Francisco Steakhouse.....

Almost a week after i received call from CityLink saying that
i have a parcel to be collected....only i went to collect it. Its from Digi......
Digi gave 3 free movie tickets.....but the due date is like 3 days after i collected the ticket.

After collecting the ticket, went for lunch at Kim Gary...
Used the free meal of the month voucher...
Found out a mistake on the menu....which i was ordering.
"Four Seas Superior SOAP + Drink"

Then, went off to watch Cloudy with a chance of Meat Balls at
Tropicana City using the free vouchers.

The movie was not bad....3/5 ...at least i find it meaningful than Up.
After the movie, there's promo bout the movie.....

Then, went to SS2 for dinner at Sanbanto Pork
again....this time tried the pork rib..
Its kinda expensive.....the serving also abit small...
because there's more fats than meat.

Then, went for dessert at 2 shops beside Sanbanto....

just opened not long ago...their 1st outlet at Kepong.
